Hacksaw Gaming has traded mountain air for African sunsets in Great Game Serengeti, sending its rifle-toting hunter from Great Game Rockies into a completely different wilderness. Judging by the amount of ammunition involved, sightseeing was never really on the itinerary.

The sequel keeps the target-shooting idea but changes enough underneath to avoid feeling like a simple safari reskin. Great Game Serengeti plays on a compact 5x3 grid with 9 paylines, while much of the action revolves around Hunting Season symbols, animal targets and a new Stampede Reveal mechanic.

The animals themselves also matter mechanically. Ostriches, giraffes, zebras, rhinos and lions can carry different star ratings, determining the quality of prizes they can become when the hunter actually manages to hit the correct reel.

Despite all the gunfire, this is not one of Hacksaw Gaming's usual volatility monsters. The game sits at medium volatility, while the maximum payout reaches 5,000x the stake.

Great Game Serengeti offers a wide betting range, making the standard game accessible to both smaller-stake players and those who prefer considerably larger spins.

The highest RTP configuration is 96.29%, while volatility is rated 3 out of 5, placing the game firmly in medium territory. That makes it noticeably less intimidating than many modern Hacksaw releases, although the feature buys can quickly increase the amount riding on individual rounds.

Wins are formed across 9 fixed paylines. The lower-paying symbols are the familiar J, Q, K and A royals, while the premium side of the paytable is occupied by ostriches, giraffes, zebras, rhinos and lions.

Wild symbols can appear on any reel and substitute for all regular paying symbols. Five Wilds across a payline produce a 25x payout.

The main gameplay is built around the hunter taking shots at the reels and transforming animal symbols into valuable Coins or Traps. From there, Great Game Serengeti branches into Stampede Reveals, three Free Spins modes and several FeatureSpin options.

Hunting Season

Landing a Hunting Season symbol triggers a Hunt after any normal wins have been paid.

A target appears above each of the five reels, and the hunter fires five shots from left to right. Shots can either hit or miss. When a target is hit and an animal symbol is sitting somewhere on the reel below it, that animal transforms into either a Coin or Trap symbol.

Each animal displays between 1 and 4 Stars, which determine the minimum quality of the resulting prize:

• 1 Star: at least a Bronze Coin
• 2 Stars: at least a Silver Coin
• 3 Stars: at least a Gold Coin
• 4 Stars: becomes a Trap with a minimum value equivalent to a Gold Coin

Coin values are divided into 4 tiers. Bronze Coins can be worth 0.2x to 1x, Silver Coins 2x to 5x, Gold Coins 10x to 50x, while Diamond Coins jump all the way up to 100x to 500x.

Trap Symbols

Trap symbols act as collectors. When one appears, it gathers the values of all Coins and other Traps involved, adding everything to its own value. Importantly, the collected symbols do not lose their original values, which can create some interesting overlapping prize situations.

Wilds can also get involved during a Hunt. If a Wild sits on a reel whose target is successfully hit, it receives a random multiplier between x2 and x20.

After Coins and Traps have been collected, each Wild multiplier is applied to between 1 and 5 Coin or Trap symbols, giving Hunting Season the potential to grow considerably beyond the original coin values.

Stampede Reveal

The new Stampede Reveal is one of the main changes from Great Game Rockies.

It can randomly trigger before the symbols land, guaranteeing a Hunting Season symbol while also removing all low-paying royal symbols from that spin.

That leaves the grid filled with more valuable animals and dramatically improves the setup for the Hunt that follows.

Khaki Quest Bonus

Landing 3 Scatters triggers 8 Khaki Quest Free Spins.

The normal Hunting Season mechanics remain active, but Hunting Season symbols have a higher chance of appearing, creating more opportunities for target shots, Coins and Trap collections.

During Khaki Quest, landing 2 additional Scatters awards +2 spins, while 3 Scatters add +4 spins.

Roaring Reign Bonus

Landing 4 Scatters awards 10 Roaring Reign Spins.

Random Stampede Reveals are removed during this feature. Instead, a Lion Bar appears beside the reels.

Every time a low-paying symbol appears on a reel successfully hit during a Hunt, the Lion Bar advances by one step. Once it reaches 10 steps, a guaranteed Stampede Reveal occurs on the following spin.

The meter then resets, although any progress earned beyond the amount required to fill it carries over after the reset.

Like Khaki Quest, Roaring Reign can be extended with additional Scatters.

Zebrawl Hidden Epic Bonus

The toughest bonus to land naturally is Zebrawl, triggered by 5 Scatters.

It awards 10 Free Spins and combines the mechanics of Roaring Reign with one very useful improvement: a Hunting Season symbol is guaranteed on every spin.

That means every round comes with another Hunt, while the Lion Bar continues working toward additional Stampede Reveals.

Feature Buys

Great Game Serengeti also offers several ways to increase feature frequency or jump directly into stronger setups.

Great Game Serengeti wastes no time telling players where they have landed. The Rockies are gone, replaced by glowing orange skies, acacia trees and the wide-open landscapes normally associated with African safari imagery.

The hunter himself appears to have travelled light. He looks suspiciously familiar from Great Game Rockies, only with a wardrobe better suited to the savannah, and spends much of the game taking potshots at targets positioned above the reels.

Hacksaw Gaming also changes the scenery as players move into the bonus rounds, shifting the lighting and time of day so the game does not remain stuck against one sunset backdrop.

Animal symbols are colourful and easy to distinguish, particularly once their star ratings become relevant during Hunting Season. Lions, rhinos, zebras, giraffes and ostriches give the grid much more personality than the standard royal symbols sitting underneath them.

It is familiar safari-slot territory visually, but polished enough to make the setting work.

Great Game Serengeti takes the skeleton of Great Game Rockies and gives it enough new tricks to justify another hunting trip. The biggest addition is Stampede Reveal, which works nicely with Hunting Season by stripping weaker symbols away and creating more promising animal-heavy boards.

The progression between the three bonus modes is also well handled.
