The state lottery has run legally since 1985 and remains untouched. Sweepstakes casinos, by contrast, now sit squarely in the regulator's crosshairs.

Iowa's early start left it ahead of much of the region, but the neighbors are catching up fast. The Midwest is quietly turning into a real fight for players and their dollars.

Just across the Mississippi, Illinois runs one of the country's largest gambling markets, complete with legal online sports betting and a steadily expanding casino footprint. What it still lacks is legal online casinos, leaving it in the same iGaming holding pattern as Iowa.

The sharper pressure comes from the west. For decades, Iowa's Council Bluffs casinos thrived on players streaming across the river from Omaha.

That math shifted once Nebraska legalized casino gambling at its racetracks and started keeping those dollars closer to home. Online sports betting still isn't live there, yet the new racinos are already nibbling at Iowa's border revenue.
